A Castro Valley man is in custody after police say he was caught in the act burglarizing a Livermore home.
Police say Brian Hayes was arrested on the morning of October 7th, after a Kathy Way resident called police to report a person in her backyard, followed by sounds of someone trying to break into her home.
Some responding officers established a perimeter around the home, while others went into the house to find the resident, who'd locked herself in an upstairs bedroom. While officers went in the backdoor, the suspect ran out the front door holding some of the homeowner's belongings.
Livermore Police say Hayes feigned surrender, but then allegedly fled on foot. Cops caught up with him on nearby Norma Way, where he was arrested.
LPD alleges Hayes had been in Livermore just a few days prior using a method known as "door checking"; knocking on doors and asking for “Richard” while actually checking to see if the home's door was locked. The police department previously warned about "door checking" late last month.

Homeowners should be more careful, especially if they are left alone. What if it isn’t just burglary they’re planning to commit?

Looks like burglars are now developing new techniques on how best to enter their victim's properties. Good to know that the man was caught.
