Livermore soldier dies after contracting rabies

A 24-year-old Army Specialist from Livermore has passed away after contracting rabies, according to a news release from the New York state base he was stationed at.

The news release says Specialist Kevin R. Shumaker, 24, died in an undislosed hospital on Wednesday.

Shumaker was stationed at Fort Drum in upstate New York with the 10th Mountain Division Soldier assigned to the Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

He'd just come to Fort Drum in August before contracting rabies, although the article states that Shumaker did not contract rabies in New York state. The circumstances surrounding the infection are still being investigated.

Shumaker joined the Army in February 2009 and, during his time in the service, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, but the release does not specify whether they are Livermore residents.

  1. It is very sad that Shumaker died at such a young age. If only his infection was detected sooner, he could have survived.
